Audi's largest Nordic sales and service unit, located in Gothenburg, has the mechanics' tools stored in an automatic Constructor Tornado storage machine. The system keeps the tools in good order, and the space saved has allowed the creation of an additional servicing point.
Din Bil's original motivation for acquiring the automatic storage system was to save floor space. Now the tools are stored in the Tornado lift system, 6.5 metres high and 4 metres wide.
'The automatic system enabled us to add a new servicing point to the workshop. Since the total capacity has increased and lead times have shortened, we are able to service 4–5 more cars per day,' workshop manager Mats Lindblad notes.
All 1,300 tools in the workshop were measured and weighed before the Tornado was manufactured. 'As we knew the number, size, and weight of the items to be stored, we were able to optimise the Tornado to suit the customer's needs. The system features 48 pallets, each with a capacity of 300 kg,' says Stefan Lindh, the manager responsible for automatic storage systems at Constructor Finland.
The tidiness and stylishness of the environment are significantly influenced by the fact that there are no tools on the floors or the walls, or, in fact, anywhere apart from in the mechanics' hands. A mechanic who needs a tool simply walks to the automatic system, orders the tool, and signs for it. When the work is done, the mechanic immediately returns the tool to the system. If other mechanics need the same tool, they can immediately see who has it.
'We have 15 mechanics. The automatic system saves their time, since they need not spend time looking for tools,' Lindblad says.
'This is an authorised Audi service centre. The centre must fulfil all of the criteria set by the client. The equipment, interior, and tool selection must be in accordance with Audi's instructions. Therefore, even the Tornado system is painted in Audi colours,' says brand director Håkan Bodeklint.
Din Bil Sverige AB is a Volkswagen subsidiary that sells and services Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Seat, and Skoda cars. Audi's sales and servicing operations are located in a separate Audi-coloured building, in line with the brand strategy. Everything is in stylish black and silver grey, including the Tornado storage system.
